The debate is on.

Warning: Liberal

From Cillizza's chat:

washingtonpost.com: The debate is on! A statement just in from McCain's campaign: "Senator McCain has spent the morning talking to members of the Administration, members of the Senate, and members of the House. He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans. The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the Senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners."

At the moment, I am so freaking irritated by this whole stupid stunt that I cannot come up with anything coherent to say.

I agree. It was a big stunt and I hope it comes back to bite him in the arse.

OK, though, stop and think for a second. These guys *can't win.* If you prepare for a campaign debate in the face of the greatest economic crisis we've seen since 1929, you're fiddling while Rome burns. If you stop campaigning to deal with the problem, it's a stunt. (reminiscent of a lot of the talk in the couple of years after 9/11 and the beginning of the Iraq war: If you do something about terrorism before it hits you, it's an eeevil pre-emptive strike. If you do nothing and wait for them to hit first, then, well, you did nothing, and you're skewered by the opposition for having known it could have happened and not having stopped it.) Give the guys a break, is my thinking. And in this case I'm talking to both sides about about both guys.
