Literary ennui

Bookish

I realized today that I can't remember the last book I actually finished. I think it was sometime in July. This is very unlike me. I've been picking up and putting down various books, losing interest in most of them. I clearly need help. Any recommendations, anyone?

Depends. Did you read and enjoy Life of Pi and/or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time? If so, you might like Jonathan Safran Foer, especially "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". If not, you might try Dog in the Night Time; it's short and engrossing which is just what a person needs to end the writing blahs. If you like that kind of book, that is.

Hmm. I'm doing a lot of re-reading right now, partly in preparation for new volumes in series coming out this fall (Outlander and Mitford), partly because I was having one of those weeks when so many of my beloved books seemed to be calling out to me to read them. In addition to the two series mentioned above I'm reading some Cynthia Voigt, and one I have on the "next up" list is a 70's apocalypse novel called "Lucifer's Hammer" -- which is ordinarily not my genre but oh how I enjoy that book.

Watership Down? We just finished that one as a family, another of my favorites.

Often when I am in a reading funk, kid lit helps pull me out.

Audiobooks. I am capable of knitting and reading at the same time (mostly on the computer, but only if I'm knitting something fairly simple), but for more complicated knitting (and for listening while walking) I love audiobooks. Audible.com ( http://www.audible.com ) has a great program - I've been a member for well over a year now - and it gives you a good excuse to buy electronic toys! I found the Creative MuVo to be inexpensive and easy to use for listening, but I now have an iPod.

I agree with Rachel that Life of Pi is great.
