Socks on circs: I don't get it.

Knitting

These days, it seems like everyone is knitting their socks on circular needles. Some say two; some say one. But still. Circs are definitely in vogue. And I have to say, what is up with that? What am I missing? What's the attraction? DPNs are so small and neat and portable. It seems like circs would be flailing about impaling things. I don't know. I guess I'm missing something. But please note, I don't have anything against circs or those who use them. I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I'm just . . . confused. What's the advantage?

For starters, dpns are more likely to fall out when you throw your sock project into a bag. Plus, I think knitting a sock on a circ is faster because there is less stopping and starting -- you knit across half the stitches, turn, and knit the other half. With dpns, you're stopping three or four times on each round to go to the next needle. It's easier to try on a sock-in-progress when it's on a circ, too.

Shall I go on? ;)

I just started learning to knit socks and i've already pulled the wrong needle out after setting it down for a few minutes. Sucked. Luckily I was in class & the teacher/lys owner helped me :P She wanted someone to do it so she could teach how to fix it anyway. LOL!!!! I prefer to knit *everything* on circulars. Straight needles (dpns included) become a WEAPON when there are little boys around. THey become a SWORD! I bet with litle girls they are batons & magic wands & stuff. But with my boys, sword fights. They don't mess with my stuff on circs, interesting but true. I tend to 'tie it off' when I can if I have to set it down. So yeah. thats my reasons! The circulars would be just as portable imo... but i use em for everything & everythign tends to be take-along w/ me (keep in mind i have one baby blanket & that is my biggest wip lol). xoxoxox

All of what Alison said + if you're using one, it never goes around impaling anything b/c you're always using the tips.

I was going to say what Alison said. I was a big fan of two circs until someone taught me the magic loop method. AHHHH!

I still knit with DPNs (love my bamboo), but I have just broken too, too many of them in my bag. Nothing like a 40" addi magic loop.

I've only just finished my first sock on dpns, and I plan to start my next pair on circs just to see what the difference is - plus I like the idea of being able to knit two socks at once. No need to go around with one sock at a time. But I could also imagine that I might stick with the dpns too. I just like trying new things!
