Mary Oliver is a favorite, as is Elizabeth Bishop.
Donald Hall and Billy Collins were both recent Poet Laureates I found quite accessible.
Marge Piercy has some nice poems about her cats.
I mean I can keep going, but what kind of poetry do you like? Humorous? Short? Long? Rhymed? Free-verse?
Posted by sprite at August 28, 2008 05:36 PMI'm not much of a poetry lover, honestly, and my tastes in that area actually surprise me. In literature I prefer sedate nineteenth-century Brits, but for poetry give me smart-mouthed twentieth century women. Go figure. (Two favorites that come to mind are Edna St. Vincent Millay and Dorothy Parker.)
