Comments: Onions without tears!

How did you manage to not wash it down the sink? I've heard hold a piece of bread in your mouth too, but evidently it's only the occasional onion that gets to me, so I just soldier through.

I often cut my onion in half and rinse before chopping. Afaik all this will do is create a milder flavor. I've often read to rinse the chopped onion or even soak in cold water half an hour before using it raw for this very purpose.

I've heard that just running water while cutting it nearby can stave off tears, but as I don't cook, I have no evidence of this...

I've heard of that before. I'm surprised you haven't run across it anywhere.

Usually when I'm cutting onions, I'm chopping them up finely -- which would be awfully difficult under running water :)
I do find that storing them in the fridge helps, however. That way I can get through *half* of an onion without crying, at least...

i'd hurt myself if i did that. someone told me burning a candle helps, but it didn't help me this weekend. but starting with them cold helps a little.
