I'm mostly annoyed that there USED to be a pay wall, and then they took it down... and now it's back. I don't think they did it deliberately to suck people in (first one's free!) but I think they're part of the reason people expect news to be free at this point. Because it has been, even at the Times.
Thanks for posting this. I agree. The Times provides a huge service, and I think they've been allowing people to under-value it by not charging at all (Does that make sense? My brain is still a wee bit under the weather). I think the metered access is a lot more logical than TimesSelect, and it also makes sense if you read their statement about how people access the site - either randomly and only a few articles at a time, or super-heavy-users *raising hand* who are on all the time (I'm imagining you're one, too). I think the Times is a good news organization to take this lead. I only wish they had done it a couple of years ago, before all those newspapers started folding.
